Messages of solidarity from Hohenschönhausen

What images do Berliners have in their minds when they think of prefabricated housing estates? As part of the Lichtenberg Open Art Festival, we invited neighbours from Hohenschönhausen to describe and reflect on their perspectives. Is there still affordable housing? Is it quieter, greener or simply better than elsewhere?

A temporary graphics studio was installed on the roof of the “Zitrone” (lemon) tower block. Guided by two moderators, strangers, neighbours and people who had never been here took turns to describe the sweet sides of Hohenschönhausen. The resulting slogans were painted live and on site on billboards to send messages of solidarity across the rooftops of Berlin. Below, people lined up in front of a telescope to watch the changing live exhibition. After the festival, the slogans were put up on posters at various locations in Berlin’s city centre to communicate other images of Hohenschönhausen to the outside world.
